DOES THE THEATER CONTRIBUTE TO A CITY?
Natalia Menéndez is an acclaimed Spanish stage director and
cultural manager and she
is currently at the head of the Madrid City Theatres; Teatro
Español and Naves Matadero.
She has a degree in Advanced Theatre studies from the Carlos
III University of Madrid and in Stage Direction and Acting from the
Royal School of Dramatic Art of Madrid.
She directed several classical and contemporary stage plays in
Spain and South America as “Tebas Land” by Sergio Blanco,“Tejiendo
la Paz van los días” on texts by Cervantes, “On ne badine pas avec
l’amour”(in Catalan) by Alfred de Musset, “L’Amante Anglaise” by
Marguerite Duras, “Reality” by Tom Stoppard, “Tantas Voces” on
texts by Pirandello, “Les Belles-sœurs “ by Michel Tremblay, “Don
Juan Tenorio” by Zorrilla, “The Doubt” by John Patrick Shanley, “El
Curioso Impertinente” by Guillén de Castro, “Trois versions de la
vie” by Yasmina Reza, “L’Hiver sous la table” by Roland Topor ,
“Eten” by Matin Van Velduizen and “El ascensor” by Emeterio Diez
She directed as well zarzuelas like “La Villana” by Amadeo
Vives, “Música clásica” de Ruperto Chapi and a chamber opera “2
Delirios” (Variations on Shakespeare), with texts by José Sanchis
Sinisterra and music by Alfredo Aracil; and her own creation for
the National Radio “Querido Mozart”.
She was appointed Artistic Director of the Almagro
International Festival of Classical Theatre from 2010 until 2017.
She has been curating for the AC/E ( Spanish External Cultural
Service ) several art and history exhibitions.
She adapted and translated various international plays,
especially by French authors, like Molière, Marivaux, Marguerite
Duras, Roland Topor but also Eugène Ionesco, John Fosse and John
Patrick Shanley. She published the adaptation of “Trois versions de
la vie”- Alba Editorial, the novel “Clic”- Ellago Ediciones, the
translation and critical edition of “Les Fausses Confidences “ by
Marivaux- Cátedra, Grupo Anaya . “A voces”, fifteen stories-Ellago
Ediciones. “Aquí, allí, allá” monologue for the magazine Escena and
among others the essay “Sólo quedan burbujas” (Textos y Ensayos
She is also theatre and television actress. Playwright for the
Company 10 & 10 Danza and she regularly gives acting workshops
and master classes and conferences on classical theatre across
Europe, America, Asia and Africa.
Throughout her career she has been awarded with several
National prizes as Medalla CELCIT, Premio Chivas 06, Premio Ojo
Crítico, Premio Agora. She has recently been appointed to the Civil
Order of Alfonso X el Sabio in 2017.
The adventure of theatrical space within the city in festivals and
theaters across Spain. Natalia Menéndez will share her views on
what is called cultural urbanism and creativity in construction.
She will focus on the coexistence and relationships of theater and
its physical environment, since the theatrical events are not
isolated from their cultural, urban and social context.
